Queensland Government Rolls out Another Grant for Small Businesses

With 11 Local Government Areas (LGA’s) in Queensland currently under lockdown orders, it’s a worrying time for small and medium business owners. The Queensland Government however has stepped up with $5000 grants for business expenses for small and medium business owners to help keep the cash flowing.

While there are plenty of businesses within those 11 LGA’s suffering from lockdowns both here and in Queensland, the COVID-19 Business Support Grants are also open to small and medium businesses across the state who are affected by the lockdown in South East Queensland. This means, for those businesses who can’t send staff into SEQ, who can’t do business with SEQ businesses, there are options in place to help you get through this time.

How Much is the Grant?

The COVID-19 Business Support Grant is $5,000 aimed at helping to provide or support cash flow to help businesses adapt to the current circumstances. The grant is also open to larger businesses within the tourism and hospitality sectors that are within the current lockdown area.

What are the Criteria?

As with any grant, it all comes down to the criteria. There are a few points that businesses need to meet to be eligible for this grant, including:

  • A reduction of at least 30% in turnover because of the lockdown, as well as,
  • A turnover of more than $75,000 and an annual payroll in Queensland of up to $10 million (the definition of small and medium businesses).
What About the Sole Traders?

Often forgotten about, sole traders who are an employing business are eligible for this grant as long as they do not receive or are not eligible to receive a disaster payment through the Federal Government. For those sole traders who don’t employ any staff, the Queensland Government advises checking whether you are eligible for income support through the COVID-19 Disaster Payment through Services Australia.

Where Can I Spend this Money?

The COVID-19 Business Support Grant through the Queensland Government is to be spent on business expenses. Being that there is no definition of the type of business expenses that can be covered, this might be a great time to look at your digital. Whether you need to build your business back up again post-COVID lockdowns, or considering ways to expand your business online, reach out and see how we can help.

Applications for the COVID-19 Business Support Grant opens in mid-August and the Queensland Government has advised that all businesses who meet the eligibility criteria will receive the grant. Keep your eye out on the Business Queensland website for further information over the next week or so.
